## Overview A dominant, semi-intelligent race of **Ape-men** (Missing Links) that inhabited the plateau and maintained a social hierarchy until their recent defeat. ## Mechanics and Rules * **Physical Characteristics**: They are as big as men but stronger, with reddish hair, whiskered faces, and "glassy gray eyes." They have long arms, enormous chests, and a crouching gait. They are slower of foot than humans due to short, bandy legs. * **Intelligence and Tools**: They carry sticks and stones, use "jabbered talk" and signs, and build complex tree-towns. They are capable of tying prisoners with creepers and conducting ritualistic executions. * **Social Hierarchy**: They were led by a king who bore a striking physical resemblance to Professor Challenger. They maintained a "tribal hegemony" over their side of the plateau. * **Ritual Execution**: They practiced a form of execution where prisoners were forced to jump from the cliff edge onto a "bristle of sharp canes" below, a practice they turned into a "proper ceremony." * **Current Status**: Following the Accala-Doda war, the Ape-men were decimated. The males were exterminated, their city destroyed, and the survivors (females and young) were reduced to a servile race, acting as "hewers of wood and drawers of water" for the Accala Indians. ## Examples from the Story * **The Capture of the Professors**: Ape-men ambushed the camp and captured Challenger, Summerlee, and Roxton, treating Challenger with mock-regal respect due to his resemblance to their king. * **The Fall of Ape-Town**: The expedition and the Accala Indians wiped out the Ape-men males, driving the last survivors over the same precipice they used for their own executions. ## Narrative Significance The Ape-men represent the primary social antagonist for the first half of the plateau exploration, serving as a dark reflection of human society and scientific evolution.
